My full name is Tran Quoc Hoang. I was born and grew up in Hue city, an ancient Capital City in Vietnam. After had graduated Quoc Hoc high school in Hue, I applied for Division of Telecommunication at Faculty of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. From 2003 to 2009, I studied at University of Technology Ho Chi Minh but business is always interesting in my mind. I applied to work at SITC (Singapore International Language Center) as salesman in October 2004. As mean, I must search customers who register to study in here. SITC is an English Center where everyone can register to study and improve their English level. That is a part-time job. I spent many training courses studying culture of company, communication with customer … It was very excited, challenged and I got more revenue (10% commission on one student). Center organized one group that will stay at a book shop to give one’s register form who is interested in the programs of center. The first month, I didn’t have customer because I haven’t been familiar with this job. Second month, I follow the experienced people and the improved situation. I have had a first customer at Minh Khai bookshop, is one of the biggest bookshop in the city. That month, I had three students (They registered TOEIC program which will spread around one year) and I received 60$ (200$/student) which was more than I earned when I were tutor. After 3 months, because I had to be prepared semester examination, I must left here to concentrate on my studies. I felt regretting and boring due to that job brought me many things: persuaded skill, improved my English skill, structure of a company and earning more money.
In late 2007, while I was doing my bachelor thesis, I applied to work at a software company. I really wanted to exercise what I had learned in the university. “A” is one of the biggest outsourcing companies in Vietnam with an international work environment. I had many opportunities to work with people from different countries such as US, Canada … It was an active and challenged job but I couldn’t resist myself from exploring investment opportunities. I soon joined a partnership with my friend to open a camera business in May 2008. Not only did we sold camera but also was a consultant, design, and installation. We didn’t hire the employees and done everything by ourselves. My customers were mainly cafe shops, restaurants. At the beginning, my customers were not much, 1 or 2 contracts during one month. Revenue was enough for hiring the location (5 million VND / 1 month). During that time, I still worked at “A”, and my business was stable, too. Luckiness came to us when we installed camera and built a website for a new restaurant at city center. Restaurant manager was satisfied after we finished. He introduced us to many other customers who are such as: his friends, restaurant customers, and other restaurant managers. Thus, the number of contracts increased significantly. We were busy all days. I realized that I have to concentrate on one thing, my passion or my hobby. In early 2009, I decided to resign at “A”. This decision was difficult for me after over a year working there. Unfortunately, we were so depend on that manager to seek new customers and we forgot to make marketing and advertising by ourselves. And an unexpected thing happened to us in March 2009. Because he conflicted with his boss, he couldn’t work here anymore. I couldn’t contact with him and never saw him again. A time later, I knew that he came back to his hometown in another province. My business was badly impacted. About one month then, we didn’t have the contract. To change the current circumstance, we began finding customer through advertising on newspapers, advertising leaflet, and internet. Expenditure of our company raised everyday. However, during the next two months, that situation still didn’t change. Disheartened by that thing, I closed my business in June 2009 after nearly one year of operation.
In July 2009, I received a job offer from “B”, which is a telecom company. It was a new challenge for me. I had to monitor the equipment installation and check the function of equipment. After 2 months, I took part in a training course of Huawei Company about the equipment in Shenzhen, China. That course only spread around 10 days but the things which I learned from the course were very much. Not only did it was knowledge of technical but also was knowledge of management and organization of oversea company. Looking back myself, I was really very weak about a management skill. The previous failure indicated that thing.
Through internet, I know about the scholarship program of ABC University. I wish to apply for DEF program, where I strongly believe that the excellent academic environment with case study method would not only enhance my management/strategic planning skills but also supplement my entrepreneur ambitions. I think that my qualities will be a valuable asset for your program. I am aware of the pressure and challenges that I will be facing during the studies in this program. However, I do want to take the challenge seriously and hope that you will accept my application. The acceptance from ABC will make me very proud and I will do my best to make a positive contribution to the diversity and competitiveness of your university.
